Heidi Chisholm Wolfgang received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music where she was also awarded the Performer’s Certificate. She earned her Degree of Proficiency in Instrument Repair in 1985 from the Red Wing Area Technical College in Minnesota. She then went on to apprentice for three years with Bill Robinson and Tom Yaeh at RGD Musical Instruments in Los Angeles focusing on oboe and clarinet. She has operated her own repair shop in the New York area for the past 18 years, specializing in oboe repair. She also currently serves as the repair technician at the Interlochen Arts Camp in the summer.
The oboe is an instrument that can give even the most seasoned technician some problems. This clinic will cover basic oboe related problems from touchy key to key adjustments through techniques to seat pads to elusive leaks and how to hunt them down and seal them. Time will be given to answer your questions regarding this instrument.
Jon
Gottlieb has been a NAPBIRT member since 1991 and has been an instrument
repair technician for 25 years. Jon
is the owner/operator of Mobile Music of New York and has been involved in the
band instrument industry since 1980.
This
clinic will concentrate on the approaches taken for servicing both rental
instruments and customer owned repairs. Discussion
will include the differences in approaches and philosophies to accomplish
various repairs by considering the many factors that are involved when choosing
a proper method for any situation. A
demonstration of ultrasonic cleaning will also be presented showing Jon’s
method for cleaning horns.
Joseph W. Butkevicius Jr. is the Owner of Michael Lange Music Company in Thomaston, CT. He has been involved with new repair projects with suppliers such as Ed Kraus and Gary Ferree, and has also been a flute consultant for Leblanc and First Act. Joe has given many Napbirt regional and national clinics and has also presented at the NTTC.
This clinic is geared toward refining your flute work for high performance. If you’ve ever had a flute that just didn’t seem to play quite right even after your best efforts, then this is the clinic for you. Joe will take you through a process designed to refine your flute repair skills and get your flutes to play to their potential and beyond. Many tips, tricks, and tooling for finding hidden leaks and mechanical issues will be discussed from a repair and player’s perspective. Modifications to correct minor design flaws will also be discussed. Also included will be a proper method for setting up a footjoint for maximum playability.
Joel Winter holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Science degrees from the Juilliard School of Music. He is a former member of the Denver and Oklahoma City symphonies and former Principal horn of the American Philharmonic and the Connecticut Grand Opera orchestras. He has performed with the New York Philharmonic and is still actively performing locally with the Nutmeg and Waterbury symphonies and the Con Brio Woodwind Quintet. His teaching background includes instructor of horn at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music and SUNY at Purchase NY.
Joe Butkevicius will moderate a discussion with Mr. Winter and his collection of various styles of horns and mouthpieces. This clinic is geared to understanding the varieties of horn wraps and mouthpieces and how they affect performance and feel for the player. A discussion of the modifications Joe has made to some of Mr. Winter’s horns and mouthpiece collection will be discussed. Mr. Winter will discuss why certain horns sound and play the way they do from a design aspect.
