Amadeus Flutes

by William S. Haynes

Michael Lange Music is now an authorized dealer for Amadeus flutes.

5-10 years ago, many advanced young flutists unable to afford $6,000 handmade flutes were buying mass-produced entry-level pro flutes, then buying a handmade headjoint to get better tone and response while spending under $3,000.

Enter the imports.

Haynes was among the first companies to look at this situation and say, "we can take this to the next level."

Amadeus flutes are hybrids of a sort.  The instruments, including the Haynes-Amadeus headjoint, are designed by the same people who design and build Haynes flutes.  The flutes are manufactured in Beijing, in a company-owned factory (not sourced out to someone who makes flutes for 10 other companies), and are inspected and adjusted in the Haynes workshop in Boston.  Every Amadeus headjoint bears the Amadeus name and the legendary Haynes logo - a symbol of the 120 years of history and expertise that went into bringing that flute to you.

Eastman Strings

Ever hear of a "Lark" violin?  That name gives string teachers and technicians an uneasy feeling in the pit of their stomach.  These were "violins" made fast & cheap in state-run Chinese factories in massive quantities in the 1970s-90s.  Like many other low-cost products (including many cheap violins being sold today under various names), the price was more attractive than the product.  Wood was used that hadn't been seasoned properly, pegs were made of inferior wood that was dyed to make it look like ebony, and the instruments were just generally poorly made.  In fact, many string teachers still specifically tell their students not to buy "Lark" instruments.  I'm not sure if they're still made, but the name is tainted.

Fast forward to the late 90's with Western-trained master luthiers, apprentices, and specialized craftsmen hand-building every part of every instrument.  Eastman Strings has developed a hard-earned reputation for quality.  Instruments ranging from 1/32 size student violins to German-made professional 4/4 basses (yes, 4/4), bows of fiberglass, carbon fiber, Brazilwood, and Pernambuco, plus exceptional cases and bags - Eastman Strings manufactures and distributes some of the finest products in the industry.  We are pleased to be stocking their student and intermediate instruments - violins start under $300 and go to about $3,000.

MAP  -Minimum Advertised Pricing

All instruments subject to MAP pricing have been adjusted on  our website.  In the coming month, all Items that have MAP requirements will be identified as in effect.  With this policy, you can be  assured that we are an authorized dealer and our stock is first rate.  If you find a MAP priced item for less somewhere else, BEWARE!  Authorized dealers are required to meet these obligations.  Purchasing from a non-authorized dealer may mean problems if you need to make a claim on a warranty.

Some manufacturers are now also placing MSP (Minimum Selling Price) policies on their products.  These MSP policies dictate the lowest price at which a dealer may sell an item.  Again, if you find a MSP priced item advertised for less than the MSP, BEWARE!  All Authorized dealers are contractually obligated to abide by these pricing policies.  Purchasing from a non-authorized dealer may mean problems if you need to make a claim on a warranty.

That's all for now!
